Calcutta University is a collegiate public state research University In the capital city Kolkata of West Bengal. Calcutta University is the first multidisciplinary and western-style institution in Asia. At present, there are 151 colleges and 21 institutes affiliated with Calcutta University. The University has given the highest number of students who have cleared the national eligibility test (NET). 

 

The university has 19,004 students, including 2,871 undergraduates, 12,353 postgraduates, and 3,780 doctoral students. The University has 100s of dedicated faculty members that make Calcutta University one of the finest institutes in the country.

  • The University has a total number of 14 campuses. The main campuses are Central campus (Asutosh Siksha prangan) on College Street, Rashbehari Siksha prangan ( Science College), Taraknath Palit Siksha prangan, Shahid Khudiram prangan.

  • According to the Times Higher Education Impact Ranking 2021, Calcutta University has secured the 1st position in the country (overall world ranking: 301-400). In one of the sub-categories ‘Decent Work and Economics Growth’, the University of Calcutta is ranked 18 worldwide.
  • The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) popularly known as Shanghai Ranking, 2020 ranked the University of Calcutta at 3rd place among all Indian Institutes and Universities and 1st place among all universities in India adjudged on the merit of overall performance.
  • India Today- HDRA University Survey 2020 has placed Calcutta University at 5th position among all general universities of the country.

    Calcutta University provides a number of 84 scholarships In the memory of some notable persons: 

    • Anil Chandra Gupta Memorial scholarship is provided to students who are pursuing a degree in the field of Bengali Literature and Philosophy.
    •  Bhupendra Nath Memorial scholarship is provided by Calcutta University to the students who are pursuing their degree in Sanskrit specialization.
    •  Ashapurna Devi birth centenary award is presented to the students of Bengali Literature.
    • Swati Boss memorial scholarship is provided to the students of English Literature.

    • Calcutta University Facilities:

      • Library: Calcutta University has a total collection of more than 10 lakh books and 200000 volumes of bound journals. The university contains more than 20 departmental libraries. The department of law library holds more than 85000 books in hard copy.
      • Laboratory: The Laboratories of Calcutta University are well equipped with multi facilities like there are labs for each department such as a chemistry lab. computer lab. electronics lab. language lab. physics lab. man-machine interface lab. math lab, seed science technology lab, agriculture, soil chemistry lab, microbiology lab, botany lab, biochemistry lab, geology lab
      • Sports Ground: The University also has facilities. In the sports complex, there are facilities of the cricket ground, Football ground, volleyball courts and athletics tracks.
      • University of Calcutta is a Collegiate Public State Research University, located at Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The university offers UG, PG, Doctoral, Diploma, and Certificate courses in the fields of Arts, Science, Commerce, Engineering, Management, Law, Journalism, etc. The admission to the B.Tech program is done on the basis of West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination . For research programs such as M.Phil and Ph.D the admission is done on the basis of the Research Entrance Test conducted by the university followed by an interview. However, Calcutta University also offers admission on the basis of merits prepared by them on the basis of 12th score for some of the UG programs.

      • The university offers admission in these courses under two categories, i.e. Category ‘A’ for CU Candidates and Category ‘B’ for Non-CU candidates. The admission under ‘A’ and ‘B’ categories is granted over 60% and 40% seats respectively.
